How BNPL Affects Your Credit Score

The honest answer is: it depends on which provider you use, whether you pay on time, and whether you opt into credit reporting. Here is exactly how each one works.

The Three Things That Matter

1. The credit check. All major BNPL providers use a soft credit check for their standard Pay in 4 products. This does not affect your credit score. Hard checks may apply to longer-term financing — most commonly from Affirm, Klarna, and Sezzle. A hard check temporarily lowers your score by a few points.

2. Payment reporting. This is where providers differ dramatically. Affirm reports everything — every payment, every missed payment — to Experian and TransUnion. Sezzle lets you opt in to report to all three bureaus. Klarna only reports financing (not Pay in 4). Afterpay, PayPal, and Zip generally do not report Pay in 4 activity at all.

3. The collections wildcard. Regardless of which provider you use, if you completely stop paying and your debt is sent to a collection agency, that collections account will appear on your credit report. This can lower your score by 60 to 100+ points and stays on your report for up to seven years. This applies to every single BNPL provider — even the ones that do not normally report.

What Is Changing in 2026 and Beyond

FICO has announced plans to incorporate BNPL data into credit scores. Affirm is already participating, reporting all loans to Experian (since April 2025) and TransUnion (since May 2025). Klarna and Afterpay have declined to participate, arguing that current credit scoring models were not designed for BNPL and could unfairly penalize consumers.

The direction is clear: within the next year or two, BNPL activity across all providers is likely to show up on credit reports and influence credit scores. What you do now — paying on time, not overextending, keeping your total BNPL debt manageable — will matter more as this transition happens.

How to Protect Your Credit While Using BNPL

Pay on time, every time. This is the single most important thing. Whether or not your provider currently reports, building a habit of on-time payments protects you now and positions you well for when reporting becomes universal.

Do not overextend. Having too many active BNPL plans across multiple providers is a risk signal. Lenders are increasingly aware of BNPL usage, and heavy use can be seen as a sign of financial stress even if it is not on your credit report yet.

Track your total picture. The biggest credit risk from BNPL is losing track of payments and accidentally defaulting. A tool like Frizzbee shows every BNPL plan from every provider in one dashboard with reminders before each due date — so nothing slips through and becomes a collections account on your credit report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Buy Now Pay Later affect your credit score?

It depends on the provider. Affirm reports all loans. Sezzle offers opt-in reporting. Klarna reports financing. Afterpay and PayPal do not report Pay in 4. Any BNPL debt sent to collections will affect your credit regardless.

Which BNPL app helps build credit?

Affirm reports all loans to Experian and TransUnion. Sezzle Up reports to all three bureaus but requires opting in. No other major provider actively helps build credit through Pay in 4.

Does BNPL do a hard credit check?

No. All major providers use a soft check for Pay in 4. Hard checks may apply to longer-term financing from Affirm, Klarna, or Sezzle.

Will BNPL show up on my credit report in the future?

Very likely. FICO is incorporating BNPL data. Affirm already reports. The trend is clearly moving toward full reporting for all providers.
